BMW E46:
the essentials.

An introduction to the fourth-generation BMW 3 Series — and a starting point for researching a particular car.

What is the BMW E46?

E46 is the model-series code for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series. BMW places this generation in the 1998–2006 period. It sits between the E36 and the E90 generation. Exact production dates differ by body style; a model code alone does not tell you the engine, equipment or condition of a specific car.

Sedan, Touring, Coupé, Convertible and Compact

The E46 family includes a four-door Sedan (Saloon), Touring estate, Coupé, Convertible and Compact hatchback. They did not all arrive or leave production at the same time. When looking for a vehicle or a part, start with its body style, production date and vehicle identification number (VIN), rather than simply searching for “E46”.

Where does the E46 M3 fit?

The E46 M3 is the performance model associated with this generation. Research it as a specific model: information about an ordinary 3 Series should not be assumed to apply to every M3 component or maintenance task. Similarly, M-style exterior accessories do not establish that a car is an M3. Check the vehicle’s documented identity.

Before viewing a used E46

First decide what you need: everyday transport, an open-top car, a touring estate or a project. Ask for the VIN, service records and a description of previous work. Compare the records with the car’s identity and ask which work has supporting invoices. At the viewing, have an independent specialist assess the body and underside, signs of corrosion or accident repair, leaks, cooling system, suspension, brakes and tyres. Test the equipment and arrange a proper road test. This is a starting checklist, not a mechanical inspection or an assessment of a particular vehicle.

Finding information and compatible parts

Use the VIN and exact variant when checking parts compatibility. Similar-looking parts and similar model names are not a guarantee of fit. For a repair decision, look for documentation that applies to the exact vehicle, then confirm it with a qualified specialist. The official BMW archive is a useful source for model history; the vehicle’s own records matter more when establishing what has happened to that individual car.
